As Christmas approaches and the panic about what to buy our loved ones sets in, we're reminded that where we shop can have a huge impact on our local community, particularly after the events of 2020.

At SiGNAL, we always aim to support local businesses in any way we can (hence the creation of the SiGNALBiZHUB) so, in the lead up to the festive season, we're encouraging all local residents to join us in celebrating #SmallBusinessSaturday this year!

Small Business Saturday is an annual event which celebrates small businesses and encourages shoppers to support small around the festive season. Last year, there was a record turnout as 17.6 million people across the UK chose to spend an estimated £800 million on 2019's Small Business Saturday!

This year, many people will be opting for online shopping meaning small high street businesses may not get the footfall that usually supports them throughout the winter months. Competing against the ease of Amazon deliveries and impossible Black Friday discounts, small businesses and the families that own them may struggle without our support.

So, SiGNAL have come up with 5 ways you can support your local community and celebrate Small Business Saturday with us. Even doing one of the below could really help support a small business owner and a local family, so please do get involved!

1. Spend your Saturday afternoon finding local alternatives

If you're struggling to browse local businesses without knowing what you want to buy for your loved ones, spend some time perusing larger producers and make a list of gift ideas.

This will help you when it comes to searching for small business alternatives. Shopping small means products are usually handcrafted or bespoke meaning your gift is that much more special and unique.

2. Share it on social #SmallBusinessSaturday

If you're thinking of shopping small or have spotted a business you know would be great for Christmas presents, shout about it on social media!

Make sure to tag the brand and use the hashtag #SmallBusinessSaturday - if you're local we've also created the hashtag #BusinessInBordon. Drop them a follow and mention what you love about their business or products so your followers know why they should support small too!

3. Get chatting

Small businesses have thrived off word of mouth for years and nothing's better than a personal recommendation from a friend. Get to know the small business owners in your local community and find out how you can support them. Revive the community spirit and find out whose family you could support this Christmas.

4. Leave Reviews

Great Google reviews can really help local businesses with their online presence. A few nice words can go a long way, not only will it encourage other shoppers to visit, it will also put a big smile on someone's face knowing that you're happy with their service.

5. Find the perfect gift for your loved ones using My Town Online
